Why Do Pit Bulls Turn Aggressive?

Any dog could suffer a mood swing and do the worst expected thing, including the pit bull.

It doesn’t happen all the time, but a pit bull can attack a human. It’s necessary to know why this can happen with any pooch at all.

  • Fear

Your pit bull may attack if he feels afraid. Especially if he has been abused earlier in his life.

He might feel threatened at every slight display that seems to be violent and choose to defend himself more violently.

Therefore adequate puppy training cannot be overemphasized. Also, the use of positive reinforcement will always do better than punishment.

Regardless of what could have happened, you must never hit your dog. Even if you think the behavior warrants it.

Your dog would not get it. He would rather get scared and hostile, consequently.

  • Territorial Behavior

All canines are territorial, including the stocky Pitbull breed. They mark their space, guard their homes and defend their humans from anything that appears dangerous.

As far as they are concerned, a new person is a danger signal. This is the reason you need to socialize your dog from puppyhood.

When your Pitbull understands that new people can enter his comfort zone without endangering it, he would not feel threatened and the earlier that is done, the better.

  • Pain

Nobody would go through pain, and discomfort without feeling disturbed.

You might be compelling your dog to do something he doesn’t like without realizing that your dog is hurting.

If it is a case of abdominal pain, your dog is going through and you attempt to lift him. The severe pain he might feel can make him growl at you and bite.

This is not because your dog hates you. He just does not have another means to communicate with you to stop.

Hence, you must also be sensitive to notice resistance and know the adequate care your dog needs at the moment

  • Sickness

Some ailments can alter your dog’s attitude. Rabies and liver disease commonly make dogs aggressive and can be the reason your dog is irked out.

If you see any changes in your dog’s behavior, you must take him to the vet. What appears to be a tantrum could be a much more serious problem.

  • Aggression Towards Food

With food, most dogs are possessive. If they have not been properly trained, they may get hostile if their food is taken away.

Not only that, but aggressive dogs will not allow you to pat them when they are eating. The most common reason for dogs biting their people is food aggression.

It’s important to note that this does not imply that you should solely concentrate on your dog.

You must also instruct your children and other visitors not to touch your dog while he is eating because even the most gentle of dogs can become aggressive if their mealtime is interrupted.

  • Redirected Aggression

If your dog is anxious or panicked, he might tend to do something by impulse, without thinking, especially when in a fight with another dog and the owner tries to separate them.

If your dog is the fearful or aggressive one, he may just turn on you.

Why Do Pit Bulls Turn On Their Owners?

Examining the mauling of one 22-year-old Bethany Lynn Stephens, a ‘dog bite’ expert, Robert Brandau, gathered that Pit bulls are fantastic dogs that must be properly handled and trained.

He added that “Pit bulls can become hostile, and an aggressive incident with one can result in significant bodily injury.”

According to him, Brandau believes that the pit bulls must have been triggered by some external factors. In his words,

“Something that made them energetic, enthusiastic, then they were held back, possibly, then they turn and lash out on anything that moves,” he explained.

Another opinion is that pit bulls are known for launching ferocious assaults without provocation.

A boy was savagely mauled by pit bulls in the Bronx, New York, in 2015. Last month, a 7-year-old kid in Lowell, Massachusetts, was mauled to death after reaching into a yard to pet a pit bull.

However, even for pit bulls, Brandau claims that attacks on their owners are quite rare.

“It’s really uncommon for your own dogs to turn on you, kill you, and then devour you,” he said.

Signs A Pitbull Will Attack

When it comes to dogs attacking people, whether sturdy pit bulls or fluffy poodles. People have admitted that these animals often give no warning indications until it’s too late.

Although, a dog can bite if it has a tense body, stiff tail, pushed-back ears, flicking tongue, or an intense look.

Pitbull attacks have prompted several communities to impose breed restrictions, such as the pit bull sterilization ban imposed in San Francisco following the fatal mauling of a 12-year-old boy in 2005.

Others, such as Miami and Denver, have outright banned the breed.

Pitbull lovers frequently reject such actions, claiming that the dogs are devoted and misunderstood.

They argue that all dogs have the potential to bite people and that owners are to be held responsible when their pets misbehave.

Pit bulls are naturally aggressive, according to victim advocacy groups, and are unreasonably responsible for deadly maulings, with bites from their viselike jaws being severe.

According to Benjamin Hart, an animal behaviorist and professor emeritus at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, “it is not uncommon for a pit bull to show no indicators of hostility, people will call it a nice dog, a sweet dog, even the neighbors – and then something triggers the dog, and it attacks a human in its typical manner of biting and hanging on until a great deal of damage is done.”

Pit bulls are responsible for over 60% of dog attack fatalities each year, according to Hart, which is “far out of proportion” when compared to other breeds.

Pit bulls make up fewer than 5% of the dog population in the United States.

“I believe it is a horrible policy to allow any child to be around a pit bull, let alone climb on one,” Hart added.

Triggers That Could Occur

In recent years, Dave Cronin, interim director of the Oakland Animal Shelter, where all dogs must be spayed or neutered regardless of breed, has noticed fewer “incidents of aggressive pit bulls” in the city.

In the case of a family in Union City, Cronin speculated that, based on his expertise with dogs, the family may have overlooked a handful of worsening circumstances before this fatal assault.

He explained that dogs may perceive children as competitors for attention, and if this was the case in Union City, the family may have overlooked tiny warning signs.

Also, if their child had attempted to ride the pitbull “like a horse” in the backyard, Cronin believes that could have sparked violence.

What To Do When Pitbull Attacks?

Here are some more suggestions for what to do if you are afraid of being attacked by a Pitbull.

  • Do not run if the dog has a rigid physique, drooping ears, a stiff tail, and an intense stare. Maintain your composure and take a step back.
  • Resist the urge to scream and flee because this will just agitate the dog more.
  • Dogs are hunters, and they will pursue you if you flee or turn your back on them. The greatest strategy to avert an attack is to remain calm.
  • Avoid eye contact as it is a signal of danger to the dog.
  • Keep your hands by your sides and remain motionless.
  • Allow the dog to lose interest in you before carefully backing away.

If the dog attacks you, do the following:

  • “Feed” it your jacket, purse, bicycle, or anything else that may be placed between you and the dog.
  • If you fall or get knocked to the ground, curl yourself into a ball with your hands over your ears and remain motionless. Make a conscious effort not to yell or roll about and as much as you can, shield your face, neck, and ears from harm.

As a responsible dog owner, there are measures you can take to flatten the pitbull attack curve.

Your dog should be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, properly socialized, and trained.

Also, teach your dog good manners and keep him away from potentially dangerous circumstances.

Taking at-risk dogs to a trainer is a good idea. Pit bulls are not entirely dangerous. Their training goes a long way to determine their composure.

A well-trained Pitbull will be a loving companion who will constantly want to be near you. However, if you are bitten by a Pitbull, the repercussions might be severe.

They have a powerful jaw, and their bite can easily kill an individual. So they could be ranked among dangerous dog breeds.

Before you wonder why Pitbulls attack, keep in mind that they are no more violent than other dog breeds.

Their negative rep stems from their history, as well as bad owners who wished to brag about their lethal companions.

Getting a pit bull isn’t like buying a piece of furniture to show off to your friends at dinner parties.

It entails welcoming a new family member into your home and causes a daily commitment to maintaining a successful relationship.

All dogs should have balanced training, be well socialized and taught proper human-dog social interaction, be kept in good health, and be treated with kindness.

To close with, “Good dragons under the control of terrible people do bad things.”
